PUBLIC ASSOCIATION OF THE FAITHFUL The World Apostolate of Fatima is a public international association of the faithful according to canons 298 - 320 and 327 - 329 of the Code of Canon Law. Only a public association of the faithful can receive a mission to teach Christian doctrine in the name of the Church, promote public worship or pursue a purpose which by nature is reserved to ecclesiastical authority (canon 301 §1). As a public association of the faithful, the members act in the name of the Church when fulfilling the purpose of the association. The principal objective of The World Apostolate of Fatima is to propagate the messages and requests that Our Lady gave at Fatima in Portugal to three shepherd children in 1917. The cult of Our Lady of Fatima was canonically promulgated by the Bishop of Leira-Fatima in 1930, and has subsequently been endorsed in word and action by the Popes of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. The Decree by which the World Apostolate of Fatima was officially erected as a public international association of the faithful states that “the World Apostolate of Fatima is a suitable instrument for the formation of the lay people through the message of Fatima in view of the new evangelisation proposed by the Holy Fathers John Paul II and Benedict XVI”. The Apostolate takes seriously the impetus these two Holy Fathers have given to the message of Fatima in service of the new evangelisation they themselves have proposed. Some examples of this impetus now follow. “The appeal of the Lady of the message of Fatima is so deeply rooted in the Gospel and the whole of Tradition that the Church feels that the message imposes a commitment on her.” (John Paul II, Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal, 13 May 1982.) “The message is addressed to every human being. The love of the Saviour’s Mother reaches every place touched by the work of salvation. Her care extends to every individual of our time, and to all the societies nations and peoples. Societies menaced by apostasy, threatened by moral degradation. The collapse of morality involves the collapse of societies.” (John Paul II, Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal, 13 May 1982.) It [the message of Fatima] is still more relevant than it was sixty-five years ago. It is still more urgent.” (John Paul II, Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal, 13 May 1982.) Mary’s appeal is not for just once. Her appeal must be taken up by generation after generation, in accordance with the ever new “signs of the times”. It must be unceasingly returned to. It must ever be taken up anew. (John Paul II, Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal, 13 May 1982.) But “the first heaven and the first earth” still exist about us and within us. We cannot ignore it. But this enables us to recognise what an immense grace was granted to us human beings when, in the midst of our pilgrimage, there shone forth on the horizon of the faith of our times this “great portent, a woman” (cf. Rev 12:1). (John Paul II, Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal, 13 May 1982.) “We would be mistaken to think that Fatima’s prophetic mission is complete.” (Benedict XVI, Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal, Thursday, 13 May 2010.) “May the seven years which separate us from the centenary of the apparitions hasten the fulfilment of the prophecy of the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to the glory of the Most Holy Trinity.” (Benedict XVI, Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal, Thursday, 13 May 2010.)
